Mint workers refused to work beyond 9 hours on 29th December, at the Salboni Mint at Kolkatta. On 14th November, they had to work 12 hours at a stretch so that new notes could be made available, in the context of demonetisation.

According to the RBI Note Printing Private Employees Union, several employees fell sick. Since they had to work non-stop, the employees started falling sick and their families were adversely impacted.

Besides the 700 employees needed at the Salboni Mint, thousands of workers are employed in mints in Mysore, Nashik and Devas. In all mints, workers have been working 12 hour shifts. The condition of these employees is bad as a result of the long hours of work.

A worker in Salboni had this to say – We are neither slaves not robots to be able work 12 hours a day for the “greater good of the country”! We are human beings, we need some rest.

Hindustani Communist Ghadar party supports the struggle of the mint workers.

Working class representatives from all over the country are gathering on 4th September, at a time when a titanic struggle is going on in our country. The struggle is between the majority of toiling and exploited people and a minority of exploiters. It is between the majority whose labour expands wealth and the minority who enjoy the fruits of wealth creation on the basis of their private property and positions of power.
