Workers of Daikin organized a protest demonstration and rally at Ambedkar Park in Neemrana in Rajasthan on 23rd October.

Daikin’s air conditioner manufacturing unit is in the industrial district of Neemrana. This is the only plant where an air conditioner is manufactured every 25 seconds. The workers at this plant have been trying to form a union since several years. The management has been continuously attacking the leadership of the workers.

On 21st October, workers had shut down production in protest against a worker’s dismissal by the management. Workers struck work inside the plant in support of their demand to take back the dismissed worker. Over a thousand workers did not budge from the strike, defying the strong contingent of police stationed outside the plant. Following this, the management promised to call for a tripartite meeting to resolve the issue. Only after that did the workers come out of the plant, at 4 am in the morning.

At the meeting the following day, the management accused the workers of causing damage to the plant and refused to listen to their demands. Further, it threatened to dismiss the 51 workers who had signed the application for registration of the union.

Working class representatives from all over the country are gathering on 4th September, at a time when a titanic struggle is going on in our country. The struggle is between the majority of toiling and exploited people and a minority of exploiters. It is between the majority whose labour expands wealth and the minority who enjoy the fruits of wealth creation on the basis of their private property and positions of power.
